Today I was reading in Psalms 51. This Psalm was written in response of Nathan's rebuke of David's sin in the adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. As I was reading through David's confession I became stuck on the following verses:
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise.
Why and how does David know that God does not delight in sacrifice or burnt offerings? What does that mean to us?
Could it be that King David had a limitless supply of the burnt offerings? Could it be that it didn't cost King David to sacrifice this way? Or maybe it was the fact that the "burnt offerings" was his way of trying to make God "happy" where King David could go on with his life?
We truly do not know the correct answer here, but some speculation!
But taking other scripture into consideration, I believe it becomes clearer!
Check out 2 Corinthians 7:10:
"Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death."
How many times to I try to come over my sins before an all KNOWING GOD? How many times do I try to appease the CREATOR of the Universe with things I do in trying to make up for things I didn't do!
May we stop covering up our sins by doing MORE for God, and begin having a Godly sorrow, or as David calls it (broken and contrite heart). It might be then and only then that we find true peace in the repentance that leads once again to the JOY of our Salvation.
